A 70.5 million euros financing has been provided by AFD to support Addis Ababa Municipality for the relocation and the expansion of Addis Ababa abattoirs.

ADDIS ABABA–On Wednesday, September 13th 2017, a signing ceremony of two loan and grant agreements took place at Ethiopia’s Ministry of Finance and Economic Cooperation (MoFEC) between H.E. Admasu Nebebe, Ethiopian State Minister of Finance and Economic Cooperation, Mr Ignace Monkam-Daverat, the French Development Agency (AFD) Regional Manager in Addis Ababa as well as H.E. Frédéric Bontems, Ambassador of France to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and to the African Union.

Through these two agreements, a 70.5 million euros financing has been provided by AFD to support Addis Ababa Municipality for the relocation and the expansion of the municipal abattoirs. Among this financing, 70 million is provided in terms of concessional loan for the construction phase, and 0.5 million is provided as a grant for the technical assistance.

The project is implemented by the Addis Ababa Abattoirs Enterprise (AAAE). It will enable the municipal enterprise to answer the growing demand of the population and level up the standards of meat quality to be sold on local and international markets. The evaluation, design and implementation of the project are done with high environmental and social standard especially regarding local community interest.

A technical assistance to AAAE will also be set up to support the change management on operational and environmental aspects. The opening of the new infrastructure is expected by 2020. It will lead to the closing of the current abattoirs situated in the city center and thus will improve the living standards of the neighborhood.

The Agence Française de Développement (AFD) is the French bilateral development bank, which has been working for more than 70 years implementing French development-aid policy. In 2016, AFD committed for 9.4 billion euros financing worldwide.
