Ethiopia to Introduce “Climate Change” in Schools, Teacher Training Institutes

Climate change will be taught as a subject in the above educational institutes as of the middle of this Ethiopian academic year, it was indicated.

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (ENA)―Climate change will be taught in schools and teacher training institutes this academic year, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change disclosed last month (September).

Though the subject has been taught in limited schools earlier, it will now be introduced in a more extensive manner, it said.

Regular students from grades 1 to twelve and students in teacher training institutes will be given the course.

Climate change will be taught as a subject in the above educational institutes as of the middle of this Ethiopian academic year, it was indicated.

Ministry Educational Awareness Creation and Development Director, Mr. Teshome Abune said teaching the new generation on climate change is essential as it is the only way to sustainability solve the negative impacts of climate related problems.

The ministry has reached collaborative agreements with the Ministry of Education and the United Nations Development Program in providing training in the subject.

United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Representative to Ethiopia, Kidanwa Abera said Ethiopia has been significantly contributing to prevent climate change.

Appreciating the effort underway, she stated that UNDP would provide the necessary support.
