Jeddah, KSA (Saudi Gazette)–The 11th Nations, Nationalities and People’s (NNP) Day was marked with great pride and pomp by the Ethiopian community in Jeddah.
More than 1,000 people representing various ethnic groups of the African country were present at the celebration being held at Ethiopian Consulate General on Thursday.
Ethiopian government representatives and foreign diplomats in Jeddah joined the local Ethiopian community, who included women and children, in the celebrations.
Wubishet Demise, Ethiopian consul general, welcomed the big crowd, saying they had come to celebrate a day of unity and renaissance. He called on various nations, nationalities and peoples of Ethiopia to scale up their support for the growth and transformation of the country.
He said the 11th Nations, Nationalities and People’s Day would play a pivotal role in renewing the promises of the people to exert more effort in the realization of Ethiopia’s renaissance.
The consul general told Saudi Gazette that the show was aimed at demonstrating unity within diversity among Ethiopia’s many ethnic groups.
Following the consul general’s speech, representatives of various ethnic groups gathered at the consulate, where they presented their music and danced in traditional costumes.
Students from the Ethiopian International Community School presented dances and songs representing various cultures.
The big gathering was also treated with traditional meals and the famous Ethiopian coffee.
Ethiopia has more than 76 nations and peoples with their own distinct history, language, traditions and culture, but they share many things in common.
