More than 51,000 condominium houses transferred to residents in Addis Ababa

ADDIS ABABA (Semonegna)–The Addis Ababa City Administration and the Ministry of Urban Development and Construction have transferred 51,229 condominium houses of different sizes to residents using a lottery system.

Out of the 51,229 condominium houses transferred, 32,653 are the so called “20/80” house plans and the rest 18,576 are “40/60” house plans. It was noted that, in the “20/80” plan, the houses are classified as: 1,248 studios, 18,823 one-bedroom, 7,127 two-bedroom, and the rest 5,455 are three-bedroom houses. The lottery drawing for the “20/80” plan included those clients who were registered during the 2005 registration time and re-registered as in 2013 plus those who registered in 2013 for three-bedroom condominium.

During the lottery draw, Takele Uma (Eng.), Addis Ababa City’s Deputy Mayor, said that, even though it was presumed that the construction of the condominium houses would be beneficial to all citizens across all roads of life, there are many people who ultimately became victims of some misappropriate actions and unforeseen issues and these people have faced a number of social issues. Especially, Eng. Takele said, farmers and their families have become disadvantaged groups because they were forced to leave their farmlands so that their lands would become construction sites. As a compensation measure, Addis Ababa City Administration’s Cabinet and the City’s Housing Administration agency decided to grant condominium houses to these victims (farmers and their children) without being included to lottery draw.

Eng. Takele Uma added that, in the future, more regulation will be taken so as to avoid such issues. Further he announced that the government will let a way for private investors to take part in the construction of condominium houses. He said, a committee has been already formed which will coordinate the government and private investors in engaging such housing development and constructions.

Ato Jantirar Abay, Minister of Urban Development and Construction, on his part said the Ethiopian government has been taking a wide range actions in order to curtail the housing problem Ethiopian people, especially those in urban areas, are facing; and positive results have be observed from these actions. Even though the housing development  agency has not been working as per its full effort, the recent improvements have showed significant positive results, according to Ato Jantirar.

Ato Jantirar also stated that the housing development agency has not only provided residential houses to citizens but also created a large number of job opportunities. In the past 13 years, he mentioned, more than 385,000 condominium houses have been constructed in Addis Ababa and other parts of the country and this has created more job opportunities for more than 1 million people.
