ADDIS ABABA (AAU)– Commencement ceremony for the School of Medicine, Addis Ababa University’s (AAU) College of Health Sciences class of 2018 was held on 15 December 2018 at the College of Business and Economics Hall. A grand total of 288 doctors of which 265 are Medical Doctors and the remaining 23 Doctors of Dental Medicine received their degree. Ninety six of the graduates are females.
The graduating students celebrated completion of their medical education by receiving their academic hoods and reciting the physician’s oath, which reaffirms their commitment to the medical profession.
This year’s commencement speakers were H.E. Sahle-Work Zewde, President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Prof. Tassew Woldehanna, AAU President and Dr. Dawit Wondimagegn, Chief Executive Director of the College of Health Sciences.
Congratulating graduates and families H.E. Sahle-Work Zewde noted that our country envisioned building strong health professionals that can significantly improve health care coverage and service quality. As you continue to grow, said the president, keep learning to do something more difficult and to rise to the challenge that the medical degree and the practice of medicine will demand.
She urged the graduates to put the best interests of their patients above their own.
Extending his congratulatory message to graduates and families Prof. Tassew also urged the graduates to care for individuals of all ethnic origins and religion background and support them through health and illness, mission to improve lives of people.
“The core component of medicine is service to patients and the larger community in which we live. Live your life dedicated service to others,” Prof. Tassew added.
H.E. Sahle-Work Zewde handed out degrees to the graduates and awards for valedictorian. The commencement ceremony concluded rendering national anthem.
