Chinese construction company Nantong Sanjian Holding Co. Ltd to undertake China-backed project in Ethiopia

HAIMEN, China ― Nantong Sanjian Holding (Group) Co. Ltd., based in Haimen, Nantong, recently won a bid to build the second section of a China-backed riverside green development project (launched as ‘Beautifying Sheger’) in Addis Ababa, capital of Ethiopia.

The project aims to create a beautiful and healthy environment for residents of the city as well as tourists. Construction on the first section started on 1st October 2019 and was planned to be completed in mid-2020.

The second section of the project will be located in the center of the city and will cover an area of about 17.85 hectares and a floor area of more than 13,000 square meters. It will include a science and technology museum, theater, children’s playground and supporting facilities such as roads and landscaping.

The construction is expected to start in May and take 14 months to complete, costing a total of 378 million yuan ($54.79 million).

It is the second China-backed project the company has undertaken, following the Meles Zenawi Leadership Academy. The contract value set a record among China-backed overseas projects the company builds.

About Addis Ababa Riverside Green Development Project

The Addis Ababa Riverside Green Development Project, otherwise known as Beautifying Sheger, is a project sponsored by the Ethiopian government and backed by Chinese government that aims to clean rivers and create public works in the capital city, Addis Ababa. It was launched on 27 February 2019 under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, and aims to run for three years. The project will run along the rivers of Addis Ababa, developing green spaces starting from Entoto to Akaki alongside the 56km river streams until they reach Akaki waste water treatment plant.
