The project to develop livestock, fisheries sector that lasts from 2018-2023 will be implemented in the Amhara, Oromia, SNNP, Tigray, Benishangul-Gumuz, and Gambella regional states.
ADDIS ABABA (ENA)–Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Resources has launched a 4.7-billion-birr livestock and fishery sector development project that will be implemented in the coming six years.
A two-day consultative forum that discusses the implementation of the project to develop livestock, fisheries sector with stakeholders was held on 27-28 April 2018 in Bishoftu.
National Project Coordinator at the Ministry, Dr. Thomas Cherinet said 170 million USD loan was obtained from World Bank and 6 million USD support from International Development Association (IDA) for the implementation of the project.
The project that lasts from 2018-2023 will be implemented in the Amhara, Oromia, SNNP, Tigray, Benishangul-Gumuz, and Gambella regional states.
The project is going to be implemented in 58 woredas and 1,625 kebeles with the objective of mainly enhancing productivity of fish and livestock and ensuring modernized marketing system, it was learned.
More than one million fish and animal breeders, cooperatives in the sector, women and youth will benefit from the project.
Besides providing improved breeding techniques, the project will build the necessary infrastructures to maintain reliable market linkages.
Dr. Thomas stated that the project will play important role in supplying raw material for the agro-processing industries in the country.
Professor Fekadu Beyene from the Ministry stated that a roadmap that will massively help to exploit Ethiopia’s livestock resource is under preparation.
Noting that the project is a component of the nation’s program on livestock sector, Professor Fekadu pointed out that the project will be pivotal in creating market-oriented livestock development.
Paul Jonathan from World Bank said the loan provided to support the implementation of the project is timely and appropriate to sustain Ethiopia’s development.
We are certain that the project will help to improve the productivity and quality of milk and increase raw materials, he added.
Leaders drawn from federal and regional states as well as development partners took part in the two-day consultative forum.
