Ethiopia among Countries with Poor Urban Planning: Research

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia–A research paper presented at a panel discussion held as part of the 7th Ethiopian Urban Forum indicates that Ethiopia is among countries with poor urban planning.

According to the paper, the problem is mainly attributable to lack of proper planning and human resources management.

A paper presented by the Ethiopian policy study and research center under the topic “urban horizontal expansion, driving forces and solutions,” recommended the end goal of urban expansion to be improving the livelihoods of dwellers.

According to the paper, those who would be relocated in connection with expansion of urban areas should get compensation to sustainably rehabilitate themselves.

Bereket Simon, Special Advisor to the Prime Minister with the rank of minister, for his part said it is essential to identify through researches the challenges facing the growing urbanization in Ethiopia.

Representatives and mayors drawn from 231 cities, including from the ministry of urban development and housing attended the panel discussion.
