The United States President, Donald J. Trump, has named Geeta Pasi as the new United States ambassador to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, replacing Michael A. Raynor who has been holding the position since September 2017 after being nominated by President Trump in May 2017. If her nomination is approved by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, she will assume her role in September 2020.
Geeta Pasi, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, class of Career Minister, has served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for African Affairs at the United States Department of State since 22 October 2018. She previously served as United States Ambassador to Chad (from September 2016 to September 2018) and as United States Ambassador to Djibouti (from 2011 to 2014).
Ms. Pasi, a New Yorker, also served as Director of Career Development and Assignments for the State Department, Director of the Department’s Office of East African Affairs, Deputy Chief of Mission at the United States Embassy in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and Deputy Principal Officer at the United States Consulate General in Frankfurt, Germany. Her other past assignments include Afghanistan Desk Officer in the Office of Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh Affairs, Political Officer at the United States Embassy in New Delhi, India, and Political Officer at the United States Embassy in Accra, Ghana.
Ms. Pasi graduated from Duke University (Durham, North Carolina) with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. She completed a Master of Arts Degree in French Studies at New York University (New York City) in 1986. She has won numerous Department of State performance awards, including the Matilde W. Sinclaire Language Award.
