ADDIS ABABA (Semonegna)–The U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa inaugurated a new state-of-the-art Satchmo Center located inside the Embassy’s compound.
It was reported that the U.S. Embassy invested over $50,000 dollars (ETB ~1.4 million) to renovate and upgrade the space where the Center is laid, which includes new technologies and welcoming spaces for engagement.
In his remarks at the event, Mr. Michael Raynor, U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia, said, “The reinvigoration of the Satchmo Center, and the work of the Embassy team to make this space more accessible to the public, is recognition of the importance of our people to people connections.”
The Satchmo Center, named after the famous African-American Jazz Musician Louis Armstrong who also went by the nickname Satchmo, provides research and information services for Ethiopian Government officials, journalists, the judiciary, academics, economists, business and health professionals, NGOs, students and others with a professional and scholarly interest in the United State. The Center’s collections include online databases, videos, up-to-date reference books, and magazines.
The Satchmo Center can assist beneficiaries in locating the following types of materials:
- U.S. law and legislation;
- Testimony before the U.S. Congress;
- U.S. foreign policy;
- Speeches and statements by the U.S. President or other U.S. officials;
- Treaties between the U.S. and other countries;
- Biographical information on American political, cultural or business leaders;
- Recent articles from American publications;
- Essential links to web sites for official U.S. government policy and much more.
The Satchmo Center is a central part of the American Spaces Ethiopia platform. In addition to the newly inaugurated center, the Embassy also hosts four other American Spaces in Bahir Dar, Dire Dawa, Jimma, and Addis Ababa, inside the Ethiopian National Archive and Library Agency (NALA)
