MEKELLE, Ethiopia (Semonegna)– The 19th International Conference of Ethiopian Studies will be held 1-5 October 2018 at Mekelle University, Mekelle, Ethiopia. The Conference’s official website has been launched fully for registration, visa application and other important information for scholars interested in participating.

The aim of the Conference of Ethiopian Studies is to allow scholars, students, and others individuals as well as institutions interested in Ethiopian Studies to present their studies and research outcomes, to exchange their experience, knowledge and ideas on different aspects of Ethiopian studies and that of the Horn of Africa, and the interconnections within the area and with the outside world. 

The program of the Conference will evolve around the main theme of the Conference “Regional and Global Ethiopia – Interconnections and Identities”. The main disciplines and sub-disciplines involved are the following:

  • Archaeology, paleoanthropology & heritage
  • Arts & architecture
  • Economics & development studies
  • Education & pedagogical science
  • History of the states and peoples of the region (political and cultural)
  • Human geography, environment & ecology
  • Law, governance & political economy
  • Philology, literature & linguistics
  • Political science & migration studies
  • Population & gender studies
  • Social anthropology & cultural studies
  • Studies of religion

The preliminary schedule can be found here. This preliminary schedule is subject to change. In principle, each presenter will be given 20 minutes presentation time plus 5 minutes discussion time. In addition to this, each panel is given 5 minutes per number of presenters, which could be used for topics such as the panel introduction, according to the discretion of the panel organizer. The schedule within each panel is to be decided by the panel organizers.
