Ethiopia and Russia map their cooperation in the field of peaceful uses of atomic energy

The roadmap determines specific steps in strengthening bilateral cooperation between Ethiopia and Russia in the field of peaceful use of atomic energy.

SOCHI, Russia (ROSATOM)– Russian Federation and the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia have signed a three-year roadmap for establishing cooperation on the construction of a nuclear power plant (NPP) and a Center for nuclear science and technology (CNST) in the African country.

The document was signed within the framework of the XI International Forum ATOMEXPO 2019 by the General Director of the State Atomic Energy Corporation (ROSATOM) of Russia Alexey Likhachev and Getahun Mekuria Kuma, the Minister of Innovation and Technology of Ethiopia.

The roadmap determines specific steps in strengthening bilateral cooperation in the field of peaceful use of atomic energy. The parties plan have identified joint actions within the framework of NPP construction and CNST construction projects. Thus, a foundation is laid for training personnel and raising public awareness about atomic energy.

On June 19, 2017, in Moscow, the State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM and the Ministry of Innovation and Technology of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the field of peaceful uses of atomic energy. The Memorandum created a legal basis for implementing bilateral cooperation in a wide range of areas, including: the development of nuclear infrastructure, development of programs to raise public awareness of nuclear technologies and their applications, using radioisotopes and radiation technologies in manufacturing, agriculture and medicine, as well as training and education of personnel.

Minister Getahun Mekuria Kuma has been attending ATOMEXPO 2019 in Sochi, Russia.  The International Forum ATOMEXPO is a key exhibition event in Russian nuclear industry. The Forum represents a site for discussion of various aspects of the modern nuclear power industry and areas of its further development. The list of participants includes the leaders of the world nuclear power industry, representatives of international, national and public organizations, Russian and foreign companies, key experts in nuclear area.
