Ethiopian super star Teddy Afro takes on global charts
ADDIS ABABA (CGTN Africa)– Ethiopian super star singer Tewodros Kassahun, popularly known as Teddy Afro, has put Ethiopia on the global music map. His fifth and most recent album dubbed “Ethiopia” has managed to rank number one on World Music Chart in May 2017, at which time more than 600,000 units had been sold and became the fastest-selling record in the country’s history. Called by many musical genius, Teddy Afro’s success still continues as his album breaks Ethiopia’s musical records. In October 2017, Sheger FM Radio’s Leza Radio Show has awarded Teddy Afro for his ‘Ethiopia’ album and ‘Ethiopia’ the song “with “Best Album of the Year” and “Best Song of the Year,” respectively, on Listeners’ Choice Award 2017. CGTN’s Girum Chala has the story.
“Ethiopians of all stripes have found something they can agree on: the government’s treatment of Teddy Afro, the country’s biggest pop star, is woefully misguided.” Tom Gardner for Quartz.
