Negus Brewing Company releases a new style of beer made with Teff grown in the US

Negus Brewing Company Addis Teff Amber

After showing an impressive market penetration and acceptability of its first flagship beer ‘Premium Craft Lager,’ Negus Brewing Company will be releasing Addis Teff Amber, an innovative new style of beer made of Teff

MANASSAS, VA – Negus Brewing Co., creator of Negus® Premium Craft Lager, announced on 26 September 2019 the most exciting product launch in the company’s history with the release of Negus® ADDIS TEFF AMBER ALE, a new style of beer, brewed with Teff grown in the USA.

Negus Brewing Co., established in 2016, has seen significant success in market penetration and expanding its distribution network with its first flagship beer “Premium Craft Lager” in DC, MD, VA and NY; while plans to distribute in NC, GA and MN are being finalized. The Craft Lager beer is currently available in over 200 establishments including big retailers such as Total Wine, Yes Organic, 7-eleven, Sniders, LA Mart, Montgomery county stores as well as all Ethiopian and Eritrean establishments. The new Addis Teff Amber Ale will also be available in the above-mentioned outlets and beyond.

After years of research and testing, Negus Brewing Co., have managed to create this one of kind beer using the wonderful grain Teff, which is the smallest and one of the most nutritious grains in the world. As we all know it is a centerpiece in Ethiopian/Eritrean cuisine in the form of Injera, but due to its gluten free nature, nutrition profile and unparalleled versatility, it has managed to catch the attention of the world, with such acclaims and accolades as “the next super food”. Unfortunately, not all attention is good, as evident in the recent widely reported case, in which a Dutch company attempted to patent Teff as their own but failed due to the hard fought court battle by the Ethiopian government. Although, the Ethiopian side won the case, it’s imperative that we take ownership of our grain, innovate and introduce it to the world ourselves. In addition, we have seen big companies capitalize on it by making gluten free pasta, bread, pancake etc, but innovative applications of Teff has been null by Ethiopians until now. In that regard, Negus Brewing Co. plans to continuously innovate and bring Teff to the world stage in the brewing application and more.

However, it is important to note that, due to shortage of Teff in the motherland, one should be careful to not put a strain in the local supply chain in Ethiopia; therefore, Negus Brewing Co. is fully committed to sourcing its Teff only from US farmers and plans to control its supply chain and acquire its own farm here in the future. In addition, the company plans to donate part of its profit to Teff research efforts towards alleviating the shortage faced in Ethiopia. As part of this commitment to innovate, the company has also completed the research and testing phase for Tella, Tej, non-alcoholic beer and other exciting beverages that reflect the rich heritage of Ethiopia, and the finished products will be released soon.

This announcement comes on the heels of a plan to raise capital via share offering for individuals in the Diaspora and back home which support the company’s vision. More information will be published regarding this matter on the company’s website in the coming weeks.
