The Free University of Amsterdam to support Ethiopian judiciary system by training professionals

Attorney General Berhanu Tsegaye the attorney general office is working in collaboration with international institutions to improve the country’s judiciary system.

ADDIS ABABA (ENA)–A Dutch-financed education and training project designed to enhance the capacity of Ethiopian judiciary was launched on 27 March 2019 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the Ethiopian News Agency reported.

The project included long- and short-term trainings that allow professionals to study up to master’s degree.

Professionals will be trained in law drafting, taxation law and conflict resolution, among others, in collaboration with the Free University of Amsterdam.

Some 178 Ethiopians have passed the entrance exam from among the registered and regions are also expected to participate in the project in the future.

Trainees drawn from the Federal Attorney General Office, Federal Supreme Court of Ethiopia, Federal High Court, Federal First Instance Court and Federal Justice and Legal Research and Training Institute will be beneficiaries, it was learned.

In addition, trainees from Document Authentication and Registration Agency, Federal Prisons, Ministry of Defense, Federal Police and Addis Ababa Police Commission will also participate.

Attorney General Berhanu Tsegaye said on the occasion the attorney general office is working in collaboration with international institutions and universities to improve the service provision in the sector.

He recalled the training given to the judiciary drawn from the federal and regional states in 2012 at second and third degree levels.

According to the Attorney General Berhanu Tsegaye, short- and long-term trainings will significantly add value to produce professionals who can ensure justice in the sector.

He added that such capacity building efforts will be significant in boosting the activities that have started to enforce the rule of law in the country.

The Netherlands Ambassador to Ethiopia, Bengt van Loosdrecht expressed his appreciation for the reform taking place in the country, adding that the two countries have long-standing cooperation.

“Strong judiciary system is a foundation for democracy,” Mr. Loosdrecht said, adding that his country is committed to support capacity building activities in the field.

Regional representatives were also in attendance of the launching ceremony of the project.
