Ethiopian Roads Authority Awards 2.7 Billion Birr Road Projects for Local Firms

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (FBC)–The Ethiopian Roads Authority has signed agreements with three contractors for the construction and upgrading of three roads at a cost of 2.7 billion birr.

The authority signed the agreements with the indigenous Afro-Tsion Construction Plc, Rama Construction Plc and Orchid Business Group Plc.

The roads with a total length of 201.35km will be built in SNNP, Oromia and Gambella regional states with the stated amount allocated by the government of Ethiopia.

According to the agreement, Afro-Tsion and Rama will jointly build the 63.35km Turmi-Omo road in SNNP and the 60km Robe-Gasera road in Oromia with an outlay of 769.8 million birr and 897.5 million birr, respectively.

Likewise, Orchid Business Group will construct the 78km Gambella-Eliya road in Gambella regional state at a cost of more than 1.29 billion birr.

The three contractors are expected to finalize the construction of the three roads within three years.

Speaking at the agreement signing ceremony, Araya Girmay, director general of the Ethiopian Roads Authority, said the construction of the roads will help boost the socio-economic benefit of the residents, allowing them to swiftly market products.

Apart from today’s agreement, the Ethiopian Roads Authority awarded 1,440km long 25 road projects for contractors this Ethiopian fiscal year alone. The projects needed over 23.2 billion birr investment.

Samson Wondimu, public relations director of the Authority, said several contracts are expected to be signed until the end of this budget year (June).
