EVENT ― Africa Business: Health Forum 2019

EVENT: Africa Business: Health Forum 2019
DATE: February 12, 2019
VENUE: Hyatt Regency Hotel, Meskel Square, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

The Africa Business: Health Forum (ABHF) aims to strengthen partnerships, promote an ongoing dialogue between the African private and public sectors, and foster opportunities for the private sector to contribute towards the collective efforts of key stakeholders in strengthening national health systems in Africa. Healthy populations matter for Africa’s long-term growth and sustainable development, and can be an avenue for economic gains through raised productivity, job creation and reduction of inequalities.

Africa’s healthcare systems demand significant investments to meet the needs of their growing populations, changing patterns of diseases and the internationally-agreed development goals.

The ABHF will bring together the participation of African leadership – governments, chief executive officers, business and finance leaders, philanthropists and high level representation from the African Union and United Nations system.

Outputs from the Forum are expected to help shape and drive a health-centric agenda for Africa’s accelerated development. The Forum itself will culminate in the launch of a number of instruments to help scale-up investments and partnerships on health.

Objectives

The Africa Business: Health Forum will be convened on the margins of the African Union Summit on 12 February 2019. This inaugural Forum is expected to create and consolidate a bond, a regional partnership between the private and public sector. The Forum will take place at a critical time as African entrepreneurs strive to shape the future of the continent by ensuring an African-driven response to reduce the burden of disease.

Specific objectives:

  • Establish the leadership role and advocacy power of African business leaders;
  • Broker continent level and regional partnership opportunities;
  • Establish new market based innovative financing vehicles for health; and
  • Leverage technology for high impact health outcomes.

The Forum will culminate with the launch of the African Business Coalition for Health (ABCHealth), an African led coalition that will mobilize a core group of private sector champions through a coordinated and neutral platform, to advance health outcomes and shape health markets across Africa. The coalition will serve as the regional platform to unlock synergies that will contribute more directly to meeting regional health goals, drive the mandate of creating long-lasting and effective impact in health across Africa, leading to improved health and wellbeing of people, and
ultimately the African economy.

Even more, the same event will see the launch of the “Healthcare and Economic Growth in Africa” Report. Preliminary findings identify the importance of improving health to drive Africa’s economic growth, and the need for the private sector to play a significant role in improving Africa’s health.

The Program

The objectives and discussion topics of the Forum have been prepared in close cooperation with the public and private sectors, UN agencies and multi-lateral organizations in order to ensure action-oriented results. The Forum includes opening and closing ceremonies, plenary sessions and interactive parallel sessions.

The Partners

The Forum’s organizing partners – Aliko Dangote Foundation, GBCHealth and the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA)– are driven by the common vision for the need to broker private sector commitments to health across Africa.
