Hyatt Hotels Corporation has opened the Hyatt Regency Addis Ababa, the first Hyatt-branded hotel in Ethiopia and the seventh in Africa.
The 188-room property is centrally located on Meskel Square, near the United Nations Conference Center and African Union Headquarters. The guestroom portfolio includes 12 Regency suites, two executive suites, one presidential suite and one royal presidential suite with four bedrooms.
The hotel has six restaurants and bars, a 2,530-square-foot fitness center and 18,300 square feet of meeting space. The Regency ballroom adjoining the hotel’s courtyard offers the best setting for memorable occasions.
In first-half 2018, Addis Ababa saw a 7.3-percent increase in occupancy, but an 11.6-percent decline in ADR in U.S. dollars. As of June, Ethiopia had the second-largest number of hotel projects under construction in the continent, and Addis Ababa had the largest pipeline in Africa for a city, with 24 hotels with 4,347 guestrooms under construction at the time.
According to a regional study from Lagos, Nigeria-based W Hospitality Group in September, Ethiopia is leading hotel development in East Africa. The hotel development pipeline in Ethiopia is up almost 50 percent from last year, with the capital city of Addis Ababa accounting for 86 percent of the total at almost 5,000 rooms in 25 hotels.
